The items were recalled for causing eight infants to suffocate over the span of five years. The babies were placed in the lounger on their back, side or stomach. As they moved about in the lounger, the infants rolled into different positions. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) explained that the loungers are just too risky to keep on the market in a recall notice. It added that loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep. Keep reading for the tragic details.
Here’s the backstory
The loungers have been recalled as infants can suffocate if they roll or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing. The recall notice says the infants could also suffocate if they roll out of the lounger onto soft bedding or a pillow. The specific models recalled are:
Boppy Original Newborn LoungersBoppy Preferred Newborn LoungersPottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers
The products were sold from January 2004 through September 2021 for between $30 and $44.
What you can do about it
If you have any of the recalled models, you must immediately stop using them. You will be entitled to a refund and must contact The Boppy Company with your details. You can contact The Boppy Company toll-free at 800-416-1355 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday or online at boppy.com. CPSC urges parents to use any lounger safely and responsibly. It stressed that “the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard.” Especially for infants, you should never add additional blankets, pillows or crib bumpers.
