The choices for shows are overwhelming in the next two weeks. This year is limelighting the young headliners who are making their mark in the modern jazz scene in-and-around the Bay Area. One of them, Jacob Collier, is a Grammy award-winning 22 year-old instrumentalist and vocalist. (What have you done today?) Known for weaving his cutting-edge use of technology into his bass-heavy showstoppers, he redefines the notion of what a typical “solo performance” does.
If you’re feeling spontaneous tonight (like, this very evening) – grab tickets now because they are going fast!
Another group that mixes jazz-centric horn arrangements with rock, reggae, Southern hip-hop, and gospel (are you keeping up?) are The Suffers—a Houston-based vocal and instrumental powerhouse. Beyond their strong HTX following, this pack of ten—lead by 29 year-old vocalist Kam Franklin—has made it to the Tiny Desk Concert series at NPR and even the Late Show With David Letterman.
Check out their latest music video “Midtown” on their website.
So get those jazz hands ready and check out some new artists this weekend! Suspenders or black dress optional. Drinks? Mandatory.
// 35th Annual SF Jazz Festival, June 6-18 in Hayes Valley at various venues, get tickets and check out the lineup here.
