Unfortunately, while hardware advancements have made it possible for you to carry around a gargantuan slab of screen, the software powering it has largely remained the same. You’re still struggling to balance that massive device while typing a text, you’re still forced to employ both of your hands on most phones, you get the idea. Sure, OEMs bundle a couple of special features for better handling but none of them mend the core shortcomings of large phones — navigation. A new Android app called Reachability Cursor, however, might just put an end to those big phones blues. Reachability Cursor does one thing and that’s bringing a computer-like cursor/pointer on your phone.
Although instead of simply putting a pointer on the screen, the app adds a floating handler to the edges. You can think of that handler as essentially a computer mouse. It is how you will drag around the cursor and to tap an element, you will have to “single-click” the handler itself. The primary reason behind dividing the concept into two floating icons instead of one is rather straightforward. The handler always stays about two inches away from the cursor letting you reach corners you wouldn’t be able to otherwise with a single hand. The whole process is surprisingly responsive and honestly, something I wish every phone maker should take notes from especially Google since it doesn’t natively offer any reachability tools. The developer even seems to have figured out how to ensure the cursor doesn’t accidentally get activated and stays out of your way when you don’t want it. You can, of course, also personalize where you’d like to pin the handler and its trigger area. In addition, you have the option to configure edge actions for quickly pulling down the notification shade or the quick settings. However, you will have to pay for most of these supplementary features and for long-press clicks as well.
