Cats, Rambo 5: Last Blood and A Medea Family Funeral are leading the pack in nominations for the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards, aka The Razzies. The infamous anti-Oscars are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and continuing a tradition of dishonoring Hollywood pretentiousness, vanity projects, and over-hyped blockbusters.
The Razzies were originally established by Hollywood publicist John J.B. Wilson as part of a joke for his private Oscar-watching party. It has since then grown into a public joke, with an academy that votes annually upon what new films released each year deserve to be recognized as the worst of the worst. The 2020 Razzies are shaping up to be a special occasion, with this year’s ruby anniversary marking the first time the official awards ceremony will be televised.
The official Razzies website posted the nominees on February 8, 2020, one day before the 2020 Oscar Awards ceremony. This marked a notable break with tradition, as the Razzie nominations are usually announced the day before the Oscar nominations, and the Razzie Awards are presented on the Saturday before the Oscar Awards. However, with the Oscars being held earlier than usual this year, the Razzies were forced to change up their schedule as well.
Cats led the field with nine Razzie nominations, securing a nod in every major category except Worst Actor and Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel. Rambo 5: Last Blood was right behind it with eight nominations, continuing the Razzies’ long tradition of dishonoring Sylvester Stallone. A Madea Family Funeral also earned eight nominations.
The highly-disappointing Hellboy reboot garnered five nominations, including Worst Screenplay and a Worst Actor nomination for star David Harbour. In an ironic mirror of the Oscars honoring Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the Razzies dishonored The Haunting of Sharon Tate (i.e., the other movie this year that was loosely based on the Manson Family killings) with four nominations including Worst Picture and a Worst Actress nomination for Hillary Duff. Also earning four nominations was John Travolta’s latest film, The Fanatic, which was a critical and commercial flop.
Other notable nominations include Rebel Wilson, who was nominated for both Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress for her work in The Hustle and Cats, respectively. Tyler Perry was nominated for three separate acting awards, including Worst Actress for his leading role as Medea in A Medea Family Funeral. There is also a notable special award for The Razzies this year; Worst Reckless Disregard For Human Life And Public Property, to be given to a movie that racked up a massive body count with little thought as to the consequences or tastefulness of the violence it showcased. The same award was fielded in 1998 and was won by Con Air.
