One of those apparently trivial bits is the weight of every Pokémon. The thing is, weight is hardly unimportant. Not only does it determine the effects of many moves such as Low Kick or Body Slam, but it also gives us a little insight into the lives these Pokémon lead. Snorlax is notorious for being big and lazy, for example. But is it even a contender in the grand scheme of things? Who are the heavyweights of the Pokémon world? Well I’ve put together a list featuring the heaviest Pokémon according to the Pokédex including all of their weights in metric and imperial units. It’s time to rank the well-fed, the heavily armored, and those who just carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.
30. Mega Rayquaza
Weight: 392.0 kg / 864.2 lbs Being powerful seems to have some sort of relationship with having more mass in the Pokémon universe. The good old Rayquaza from Generation III doesn’t have the pounds to make the cut. But after it uses the Dragon Ascent move and becomes this Dragon/Flying beast, all those extra blades and shiny gems make it almost 200 kg heavier. It’s chunkier, cooler, more powerful, and continues to carry the responsibility of keeping Kyogre and Groudon from destroying the world.
29. Mega Aggron
Weight: 395.0 kg / 870.8 lbs I’ll be honest with you. I love Aggron, and I was devastated to find out it was the 31st heaviest Pokémon and therefore wouldn’t make the list… until I noticed Mega Aggron. Looking completely jacked and sporting an exoskeleton resembling a full plate of armor, this powerful Steel-type takes being the “Iron Armor Pokémon” to the next level. Aggron are territorial creatures known to fight Tyranitar over living space, but when it comes to weight, Tyranitar has nothing on my boy.
28. Wailord
Weight: 398.0 kg / 877.4 lbs It’s only natural that a Pokémon based on the largest, heaviest animal on Earth would make it into the top 30. Known as the Float Whale Pokémon, Wailord traverses the seas of the Hoenn region eating prodigious amounts of smaller Pokémon like Wishiwashi. This has allowed it to acquire its characteristic Zeppelin-like physique, which packs of Wailord use to make massive splashes that help them herd their prey. Supposedly the spectacle of leaping Wailord in the wilds is a wonderful sight to behold.
27. Steelix
Weight: 400.0 kg / 881.8 lbs Well, nobody here was expecting a metal snake comprised of several blocks of steel to be light. At least, I’m assuming that’s steel, despite it being known as the Iron Snake Pokémon. Iron doesn’t look like that! And, come on, it’s called “Steelix” for a reason. This Steel/Ground-type’s weight is the consequence of an incredibly dense molecular make-up, product of living deep underground, compressed by tons of rock and soil. According to the Pokédex its body becomes diamond-like after enough time too. It’s what happens when an Onix follows its dreams and digs as deep as it can: pursuing its ideals.
26. Alolan Exeggutor
Weight: 415.6 kg / 916.2 lbs Next up we have a classic critter from the times of Pokémon Red & Blue after it got some love with Generation VII’s Alolan varieties. According to the Alolan people, this is the way Exeggutor are supposed to look. Anything else is a malnourished weed and should be looked at with pity. If we’re looking at their size and weight, that certainly seems to be the case. This Grass/Dragon-type has changed the practicality of a chunky body for the glory of this grandiose form, and the weight of one too.
25. Regigigas
Weight: 420.0 kg / 925.9 lbs Like a golem of nature’s powers, Regigigas is said by many oral traditions to have moved the continents to their current positions and shaped the land. It’s only natural for a being of such brawn to be at least a bit on the heavy side. It was introduced in Generation IV as the maker of Hoenn’s Regis (not exactly light themselves) but otherwise remains shrouded in mystery. Despite all the uncertainty, knowing the Colossal Pokémon’s exact weight doesn’t seem to be a problem for the region’s top Pokémon researchers.
24. Primal Kyogre
Weight: 430.0 kg / 948.0 lbs Good old Kyogre didn’t make it into the list originally, but once it has returned to its former glory through Primal Reversion and some weight lifting, the Pokémon personification of the sea gets the recognition it deserves for its mad gains. This Water-type Legendary from Generation III was amazing back in the day, but I’m thankful for the revamped look they gave it in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. It reminds me of drawing the Sea Basin Pokémon back when I was a child and taking artistic liberties to make it look cooler. I’d have sold them my design for cheaper than Ken Sugimori did, I assure you.
23. Heatran
Weight: 430.0 kg / 948.0 lbs Being a Legendary Pokémon is no requirement to join the heavyweights of the Pokémon universe. Despite being somewhat uncommon and hard to find, Heatran is a regular Pokémon species like any other. This Fire/Steel-type has a fiery spirit and a body made of molten steel that’s as heavy as it is badass. This weight is backed-up by a lot of brawn. The fact that the strength of its cross-shaped feet is enough to dig into the rock of the underground magma tunnels it inhabits to move its massive body around is proof of that.
22. Snorlax
Weight: 460.0 kg / 1014.1 lbs Snorlax has been known as a notoriously big and heavy Pokémon ever since it was introduced among the original 151, so much so that the only way to remove him from a road if it’s fallen asleep on it is to find and play a Pokéflute. That said, the Sleeping Pokémon is far from being the heaviest around, despite spending most of its time either eating, resting or digesting. It may have the Thick Fat and Gluttony abilities, but there’s a limit to how much you can achieve with flesh alone. There are Pokémon made of rock and steel in the race, and Snorlax’s soft carbon-based belly just doesn’t cut it. Its Gigantamax form even has a small ecosystem on said belly, but weight data for these forms isn’t conclusive yet.
21. Necrozma (Dusk Mane)
Weight: 460.0 kg / 1014.1 lbs A clear example of this difference between materials is Necrozma, a Pokémon that has traveled through different dimensions and is made of elements we don’t fully understand. It weighs the most in its Dusk Mane form, acquired by devouring the light of Solgaleo. This Psychic/Steel-type is essentially a lion of light with a stylish, sharp-edged exoskeleton, and has the added-up mass of both Solgaleo and Necrozma. It may be a bit bizarre to consider what’s essentially a fusion as the 21st heaviest Pokémon. But this ferocious creature is too cool to leave out.
20. Hoopa Unbound
Weight: 490.0 kg / 1080.3 lbs Even cooler and heavier than Necrozma is the unleashed version of Hoopa, the Mischief Pokémon from Generation VI. The design for this mysterious event-exclusive Pokémon is heavily influenced by Hindu deities and middle-eastern legends of the Djinn. Which are essentially magical specters and demons said to possess immense powers they use to both help and hinder humans. So that’s fun. It’s unknown exactly why this Psychic/Dark-type was sealed, but there are legends of it stealing entire castles to gain their riches, which people usually don’t take kindly to.
19. Avalugg
Weight: 505.0 kg / 1113.3 lbs Known as the Iceberg Pokémon, Avalugg is made of a material resembling ice, but hard as steel. Given it’s not all that big, it must be very dense to achieve such a massive weight. This Ice-type beast is known to carry many Bergmite on its back, helping out other members of its evolutionary line. Assuming the weight provided by the Pokédex doesn’t include these, then an Avalugg in the wild must be even heavier. I wonder if it was an Avalugg that the Titanic hit… At least that’d explain how nobody saw it coming. It moved!
18. Stonjourner
Weight: 520.0 kg / 1146.4 lbs It’s only natural that a Pokémon inspired by some of the largest stones ever moved and shaped by prehistoric human hands made it into the ranking. Stonjourner, the Big Rock Pokémon, is essentially a walking megalith – a mobile version of Stonehenge, so to speak. It’s known to stand in the grasslands, enjoying the breeze and watching the sun move through the sky most of the time. But once a year many Stonjourner gather and form circles thought to have had religious meaning to earlier civilizations of the Pokémon world.
17. Metagross
Weight: 550.0 kg / 1212.5 lbs One of the most well-known and loved Pokémon in the ranking has to be Metagross, a Steel/Psychic-type that became notorious back in Generation III for its effectiveness in competitive play. Where a Metang is made of two fused Beldum, Metagross is made of two fused Metang. It’s the collective consciousness of four individual Beldum, working as one, creating a supercomputer brain greater than the sum of its parts. The same can be said of this creature’s weight, considerably greater than that of four Beldum.
16. Zygarde (Complete Forme)
Weight: 610.0 kg / 1344.8 lbs Speaking of Pokémon that are greater than the sum of their parts, we can’t fail to mention Zygarde, the Order Pokémon. Despite being one of the Legendary Pokémon from Generation VI, it’s also possible to acquire one in Pokémon Sun & Moon. Here it was revealed that Zygarde is an organism comprised of many “Zygarde Cells”, which you can collect throughout Alola. As you collect them you’ll get to see different states of Zygarde development. Get them all, and you’ll be treated to the massively powerful Complete Forme, which is essentially a Megazord from Power Rangers.
15. Copperajah
Weight: 650.0 kg / 1433.0 lbs If collecting 100 tiny cells all around Alola sounds too complex, yet you still need your next Poké-Sumo champion, consider traveling to Galar to get a Copperajah. Referred to by the Pokédex as the Copperderm Pokémon, this metal-plated elephant is an absolute unit of pure chunkiness. This Steel-type evolves from the cuter and smaller Cufant becoming an unstoppable force with great Attack and insane HP. What’s so interesting about Copperajah in the scope of this ranking is its Heavy Metal ability, which doubles the weight of the Pokémon while in battle. If we were to take that as its official weight, it’d be the heaviest Pokémon by far.
14. Dialga
Weight: 683.0 kg / 1505.8 lbs Known as the Temporal Pokémon, Dialga is the Pokémon Arceus created to bear the weight of years and history. It was introduced as the main Legendary for Pokémon Diamond, with a body that seems made of some kind of metal and other hardy materials that contribute to its weight. Anyone who’s been around this Earth for a while knows few things are heavier than the passage of time.
13. Mega Steelix
Weight: 740.0 kg / 1631.4 lbs Despite already standing at the 27th spot in our heavy Pokémon ranking, the wonders of Mega Evolution give Steelix another moment to shine. And shine it will, since the Mega Evolution process has made Mega Steelix grow a series of glimmering diamond spikes along its body. As expected, this transformation comes with a considerable increase in mass. With sharper edges, a cooler design, and an absurdly high Defense stat, it seems this Steel/Ground-type has made it far in life.
12. Giratina (Altered Forme)
Weight: 750.0 kg / 1653.5 lbs Despite looking considerably more menacing in its Origin Forme, Giratina’s Altered Forme remains considerably heavier, and therefore more dangerous. For a Pokémon as violent as Giratina, every gram is a weapon with which to crush its enemies. Known as the Renegade Pokémon for its unruly tendencies, this Ghost/Dragon-type carries with it the weight of its sins. I, for one, am all for leaving this vicious beast sealed in the Distortion World where it belongs.
11. Zamazenta
Weight: 785.0 kg / 1730.6 lbs On the opposite side of the moral spectrum stands Zamazenta, the heroic figure of legend said to have fought alongside a Galarian king to protect the region from an invasion long ago. With such recognition come expectations, and this Legendary doggo carries their weight with pride and grace. It’s only natural that it’d be so heavy, since its position as the shield that guards the realms of people and Pokémon requires it to withstand any and all blows without flinching.
10. Melmetal
Weight: 800.0 kg / 1763.7 lbs Not as gracious but just as powerful and considerably heavier than Zamazenta is Melmetal, the Hex Nut Pokémon. Considering this Pokémon’s body is mostly comprised of mercury, its weight should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the periodic table. In fact, considering a liter of mercury weighs in at around 1400 kg, this big guy should probably weigh much, much more. Perhaps it’s empty on the inside?
9. Stakataka
Weight: 820.0 kg / 1807.8 lbs Generation VII introduced a different kind of creature called Ultra Beasts, beings from another world that wandered into Alola by accident. Among them, Stakataka is one of the least organic-looking. Known as the Rampart Pokémon, this mysterious four-legged stack of blocks is actually the combined effort of many smaller life-forms, each of which has a notorious shiny “eye”. This Rock/Steel-type is an absolute tank in combat. Which is awfully fitting for what’s quite literally a “brick house”.
8. Guzzlord
Weight: 888.0 kg / 1957.7 lbs Another Ultra Beast to make the list is Guzzlord, the Junkivore Pokémon. Like most Ultra Beasts, Guzzlord has a design that differs on a fundamental level from that of a normal Pokémon. In its case, it looks like something you’d find at the end of a dungeon in a Final Fantasy game. This Dark/Dragon-type has become this big and heavy thanks to its ability to eat anything it finds, from rusty tools to run-down cars. It spends so much time doing this on a day-to-day basis, scientists have begun speculating that Guzzlord never stops being hungry.
7. Mudsdale
Weight: 920.0 kg / 2028.3 lbs With a very powerful body and a stoic nature, Mudsdale is a sturdy horse that covers its legs in an ultra-hard and heavy substance made by mixing mud with its own saliva. This lets it deal devastating damage with its back legs. This Pokémon is so heavy, it’ll destroy any hard surface it runs on, like asphalt. For this reason, Mudsdale are banned from traversing many public roads.
6. Mega Metagross
Weight: 942.9 kg / 2078.7 lbs In order to keep Metagross competitive and avoid offending longtime fans of the Iron Leg Pokémon, it was given the Mega Evolution treatment in Generation VI. This massive beast is the result of one Metagross, one Metang and two Beldum linking up, which gives it the smarts and brawn of eight Beldum working together in perfect unison. This incredible intelligence surpasses that of a regular Metagross considerably. Disturbingly, it also makes Mega Metagross much crueler in battle.
5. Groudon
Weight: 950.0 kg / 2094.4 kg The next pocket monster in our ranking is the main Legendary from Pokémon Ruby: Groudon. For a Pokémon that’s supposed to have brought the different landmasses of the world into existence during its battle against Kyogre over control of the forces of nature, 950.0 kg seems pretty chill. The thing is, Groudon has been asleep for ages. And do you know what you can’t do while sleeping? Lift. Eat. Train. Groudon has been slacking off for far too long.
4. Eternatus
Weight: 950.0 kg / 2094.4 lbs The addition of the Galar region came with many secrets and mysteries, chief among them the phenomenon of Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing. At the center of it all stands – or floats – Eternatus, the Gigantic Pokémon. This Poison/Dragon-type arrived at the Galar region 20.000 years ago, sealed inside a meteorite of unknown origin. That said, its massive weight likely has more to do with size than it does with power or composition. This thing is over 20 meters tall!
3. Primal Groudon
Weight: 999.7 kg / 2204.0 lb Back to its former glory thanks to the power of Primal Reversion, the Continent Pokémon climbs a couple of spots on the ranking. It’s bigger, angrier and has the power to reshape the land at a moment’s notice, raising and expanding whole continents. This Ground/Fire-type is among the coolest Pokémon released in recent iterations of the game, by far. They may be equals in terms of power and general strength. But it’s clear who the heavyweight is between Groudon and Kyogre.
2. Cosmoem
Weight: 999.9 kg / 2204.4 lbs Known as the Protostar Pokémon, Cosmoem holds within it the infinity of the universe. It may be cute and maybe even look a bit silly, but this Psychic-type is much more than meets the eye. Despite being just 10 cm tall, this tiny ball of stars has been accumulating energy and growing heavier and heavier so it can evolve into either Solgaleo or Lunala. On that note, despite being just as heavy as our #1 ranked ‘mon on this list, Cosmoem gets second place because it’s only a temporal form. So it’ll lose most of its weight once it transitions into the next stage. I figure that’s a good enough reason, right?
1. Celesteela
Weight: 999.9 kg/ 2204.4 lbs And that’s how, over a technicality, the Ultra Beast Celesteela gets the title of “Heaviest Pokémon in the Franchise”. Looking like the middle ground between a Japanese lady in a traditional kimono and a Space Shuttle, this Steel/Flying-type is a new interesting take of the Japanese folk tale of Princess Kaguya. She’s a girl born on the Moon and sent to Earth inside a bamboo shoot. Weird but also, these games come from Japan so it’s to be expected. Considering the Tale of Princess Kaguya is considered the oldest Japanese story to be put down in prose, you could say Celesteela carries the weight of a literary tradition on its shoulders… if it had any.
