According to a new report from the Information, Apple has shelved its plans for a “walkie-talkie” feature on the iPhone. Apple was purportedly developing this technology in partnership with Intel as a way to let iPhone users communicate in areas without cellular coverage. The report says that the technology would have worked like “a walkie-talkie for text messages” and was referred to internally as “Project OGRS” — because of its use of the “Off Grid Radio Service....

Thus far, Apple has inked deals with some major entertainment names for its original video platform. A new report form The New York Times today highlights another potential effort, this time involving former president Barack Obama… Key details about the content are unclear at this point, but there are reportedly some ideas floating around. For instance, President Obama could “moderate conversations” on topics that were tent poles of his presidency, such as health care, climate change, and immigration....

A quarter reported 6-7 hours, while only 15% got 8-9 hours, and just 6.7% the full claimed ten hours. Readers have also had very different experiences of the accuracy of battery life estimates, before Apple ceased providing them. The most common option selected was almost evenly split between those finding that the estimate was accurate to less than hour and those reporting that it was out by a massive four or more hours....

The items were recalled for causing eight infants to suffocate over the span of five years. The babies were placed in the lounger on their back, side or stomach. As they moved about in the lounger, the infants rolled into different positions. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) explained that the loungers are just too risky to keep on the market in a recall notice. It added that loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep....

In addition to implementing several bug fixes with iOS 7.0.x updates, Apple has simplified its user-interface for the iPhone 5s’s new Burst Mode camera feature in iOS 7.0.2. For those unfamiliar, Burst Mode allows a user to keep their finger on the Camera app’s shutter button in order to capture photos at a rate of 10 pictures per second. This ability allows a user to capture a good image in action sequences or at other times....

The original RED Hydrogen One was a disaster and that’s putting it mildly. Not to be deterred by its failure though, the company today announced that it is working on the Hydrogen Two. What’s more, the promised camera modules that were to launch alongside the Hydrogen One will also launch alongside the new phone. RED founder Jim Jannard has blamed the failure of the original Hydrogen One on an incompetent Chinese OEM....

You get the idea. The Redmi Note series has seen itself expand into a family of sorts over the past three years or so, with a Pro and a Pro Max being added to the line (we expect a simple Max to join the club at some stage). A new report this morning detailed Apple’s investment in equipment and machinery during the most recent quarter as record-breaking, which indicates the company is certainly up to something. According to Asymco, Apple’s financial reports hint at even more future investments. The Cupertino, Calif.-based Company spent $1.3 billion in the last quarter, with another $2.5 billion needed over the next two quarters. “Such numbers are hard to grasp. They are unprecedented not only for Apple but for almost any comparable company,” explained Asymco’s Horace Dediu....

Rumors that Apple plans to develop and market a self-driving vehicle may have gone cold, but CEO Tim Cook has publicly acknowledged that the company is working on a ‘large project’ around autonomous systems. The latest detail in the story comes via Jalopnik which reports that Apple may have leased Chrysler’s old proving grounds which could be used for testing autonomous cars. Chrysler previously operated a proving ground for developing and testing its vehicles in Wittmann, Arizona, although its current facility is located in nearby Yucca....

Amid its ongoing legal battle with Apple, Qualcomm is said to be cutting jobs in an effort to reduce costs. A new report from Bloomberg this afternoon says that Qualcomm is cutting its workforce as part of “cost reductions.” A workforce reduction, such as this one, affects not only those employees who are part of the reduction, but their families, co-workers and the community. We recognize this and have offered affected employees supportive severance packages to reduce the impact of this transition on them....

First Glance When you first install ObjectDock, it will replicate all of the pinned icons on your windows Taskbar (handy). Unfortunately, the icon for the pinned webapps isn’t very good once they get enlarged to fit the dock. The visual style of the dock matches up with the iOS (iPhone, iPad) icon dock similar to Rocketdock as well. Much like the Windows taskbar, as you open apps on the bar, they will automatically appear on ObjectDock, and then disappear when closed; unless you pin them....

Apple is expected to begin shifting iPhones from LCD displays to improved OLED screens starting in 2018, according to Nikkei Asian Review. Currently the display technology is only used by Apple to produce Apple Watch displays while iPhones and iPads use older LCD technology. OLED benefits from greater contrast levels and much deeper blacks as the display only illuminates to present color. This offers energy efficiency that leads to improved battery life compared lighting up the entire display each time....

According to a report from Financial Times, carriers in Europe are stocking up on mini SIM cards designed for Apple’s next-generation iPhone in anticipation of the device’s expected October launch. In June, reports speculated that Apple’s nano-SIM design for the new 4FF standard was selected by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, while hands-on video of the next-generation iPhone backs, which we first revealed in May, showed what appeared to be a smaller SIM card holder....
